It's A Wrap! 01/24/2012

The premiere issue is here, you're here, now how about leaving a little note for the Cap'n? Something you read on these virtual pages that especially tickled your fancy; a little bit of bragging on your own recent successes; a word of congrats for the TEAM PYP winners on this page; or how about "that" word - you know, the contest thing?  No, not the "3-articles-word" but the other word, remember?

Don't you go posting that "3-articles-word" you think you found.  That doesn't go here.  You have to stuff a note in a bottle for that, and address it to me at beyondaries@portyonderpress.com.  Get it wrong and I'll be feedin' ya to the sharks, matey!  But hey, I'm glad you've joined us, ya bilge rat, and I want to make it perfectly clear that I'd love to see yer face around here again, SOON.  We'll lift a mug together and curse the gathering storms!

~Chila,
Cap'n of this sea-worthy tub, and not ashamed a lick ...

This is no tub, Cap'n.

This is a ship of the line, and the NYT book lists will someday fail to repel the boarders sent from her decks.

Great sentiment, Heidi, and I think that's what trying to be our best entails. It's not shooting for something at ground level, but shooting for the highest point, the stars, in our efforts. And that's certainly my goal - one of the many stars I see while drifting along in this vessel on an ocean of glass ... reaching that star, then seeking out another in the next galaxy, and another, and ...

Thanks for the comment! Very inspiring.

'Tis a brilliant site for your sea-worthy crew, Cap'n! And a big "Yo-ho-ho" for having me swab the deck instead of walkin' the plank!

Ever the scurvy matey,

The Lauraceae or laurel family, which are aromatic, evergreen trees or shrubs brought me here, but the third one eludes me.

Yes, I think a review of the botany on this ship is in order .... Thanks, Dan!

I posted a 'critique' of a newly released book on Amazon today by a fellow author in the same genre that I read. It was honest, not just driving up the stars or ratings unnecessarily. I think it is important that all authors pitch to write more reviews of the books they are reading so the writer and readers (customers) get feedback from all perspectives. :) It would be great to see an article on how to encourage not just other authors, but our readers to leave more reviews on your blog in the future.

Hmm, very good idea, Sam. I like that. A lot. And yes, I caught "the word" up there. Gotcha entered ...

And I'll be sure to look into the article idea. For sure. Thanks!

You bet, Roz! The pleasure was all ours. After all, how often is it that we can sail our scurvy vessel around the shores of Great Britain fer ta pick up such a fine lassie as yerself? Not often, I swear. Not often!

(I be thankin' ya.)

I've been working my way through your articles. I'd like to enter the "critique" contest. :-)

On the Character article, are Mary Sues such a problem in regular fiction? I know they're despised in fanfiction, but I've encountered them in regular fiction and they're usually not a big deal because they're well balanced. I ask because I'm in the process of writing a story around one. :-D

Really, "Mary Sue" is just code for a two-dimensional, unrealistically perfect character, and that's a no-no in every genre. As long as your character isn't guilty of those sins, she's probably not a Mary Sue and therefore not problematic.

Thanks for reading the post!

Hi, I just caught site of your sails in the distance and am very interested in finding out more. When is your next launch, I don't want to miss the boat. I have a lot to learn about sailing and the deep blue sea...and I believe I've found the Captain of the right boat to teach me.

Congratulations on your successful launch.

God bless the Captain,

Hi.....I just thought I'd let you know, when I was surfing and caught site of your sails, I critiqued your sail to be sure I wanted to come aboard and examine the wind conditions blowing your genre sails in the right direction. I forgot to add all that in my first comment.

Guess you can see by now that I'm in need of a lot of training before I set sail on writing my seaworthy mast. I have great need of your publications. Please add me to the list of trainees. I'd appreciate the favor.

Hi Teric, I appreciated your article on Christian fiction. I don't know whether I'd fit into the edgy camp, but I deal with issues such as persecution and sex trafficking in my writing. Sometimes when we try to paint the world as all coming out right by the end of the story, we drive some readers away because we lack realism. Thanks for your admonitions on the issue.

Debbie,

I am glad you found the article on "Christian Fiction" to be of merit. Persecution and sex trafficking in your writing - sounds a bit edgy to me, and that's a good thing. By that I mean that it's good when writers, espousing a Christian worldview, address real societal issues within their storyline as opposed to fairy tale scripts.

Persecution, wars and rumors of wars, the foolishness of most religious men... Rape, murder, fornication... the Bible runs the whole gamut on "real life" issues and addresses them. It is a fair assessment to say that The Bible, itself, is an edgy book.

This ain't Hollywood; "Club Church" fantasies don't help many outside of the stained glass windows; and the lyrics "life is but a dream" is simply wishful thinking.

Keep it real... Keep it plausible... And keep on keeping on! (Because you will be persecuted by your own for your honesty and realism.) Retain your substance.

As iron sharpens iron...

Critiqued a few of your visuals. Love the graphic in your banner, you ought to link it to your publishing site. Delighted to know you have a poetry section. Will keep checking back. It's also nice that you have a Christian Fiction section too.
