Chila Says ... Welcome! to the premiere issue of the quarterly BEYONDARIES EZINE, a writing mag for all readers and writers.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page for links and hints on what's here, or simply begin with the drop down menu above. We hope you leave a comment on our blog (far right tab on the header bar). I've given you a quick intro here too. Please read on ...
What's Here ... Tons!
Did you know we have articles by authors, editors, poets, artists, and even a former Nebula nominee? Did you know you can scrounge around here and find everything from writing tips and tricks, genre specifics, interviews, contests, keys to great illustration, and more? Try me.
Twitterviews! ... The first ever Twitter interviews -
They're probably not the first to ever occur, but maybe the first to be called a "twitterview"? Should I register the name? :) Third tab from the right above. Here too. And for openers, I was able to snag novelist James Scott Bell this morning. Check out what he had to say to my "3 short questions."
Contests ... We've got TWO in this issue; yes, 2!
The first one is easy. Leave us a note on our blog (far right tab above) about something you've read here, by the deadline of February 28th, and mention the word "critique" in it. We'll randomly choose one winner to receive one free "soft" critique of a single chapter of your manuscript, by 2 of our editors. Whoa!
The second is easy too, but you have to keep your eyes open, kinda like this: < o/o >. We've woven one unusual word throughout three (3) different articles. Be the first to find all 3 articles with that same unusual word, and mention the names of those articles in an email addressed to beyondaries@portyonderpress.com. The winner can pick THREE books from the following list: The Christmas Campfire Collection (14 of today's top western writers, published by Port Yonder Press, softcover only); Outlining Your Novel: Map Your Way to Success by Katie Weiland (Kindle or print); My Memories of a Future Life by Roz Morris (contemporary literary fiction in Kindle or print); Manaquest by Shannon Elizabeth Hardwick (contemporary poetry, print); or Silver Thaw by Amy Rose Davis (a fantasy novella, ebook). And how about a tiny, teensy hint about that "unusual word"? Sure. Some people drink it. Now, hunt and find! (Editor's Note: Contributors and their families are ineligible, as you might expect.) Winner will be posted in the next issue, in April.
TEAM PYP results? Yes! Here. In the future, you'll find those under the PYP (Port Yonder Press) tab above.
Publisher's Choice ... My favorite columns for 2012Q1?
First place has to go to Occupy Amazon.com - Traci Tyne Hilton has included a short pert video and some great advice on author branding in a functional multimedia column;Traci rocked this 'zine by digging down and giving us her very best for this premiere issue. Kudos to Traci!
Two other faves are Dan Holloway's Word Up, simply because it was fun and intriguing to read. Also, Teric Darken's Sky High column was different, and gave us a realistic look at the pitfalls of some "Christian fiction." Good considerations, with the additional benefits of a vid! Gotta love those vids ...
Feel free to leave the blog page open in a separate browser tab, and jot thoughts about each article as you read it. I'll encourage the authors to respond, but no promises when it comes to the busier guest contributors, speaking of which .... (next paragraph down). More introductory thoughts about this first issue? Yes, on the "Captain's" Daring Entries page.
Upcoming ... You don't want to miss a single online issue in 2012!
We'll have an interview with bestselling UK fantasy author Stephen Lawhead (Dragon King Trilogy, Pendragon Cycle, etc.), a chat with the illustrator for the #1 NYT bestselling Throne of Fire book (Kane Chronicles), John Rocco, and more, I hope, as time permits.
Title ... Beyond + Boundaries = BEYONDARIES.
Our brilliant art columnist, Benjamin Bailey, came up with that funky & functional portmanteau. It defines the vision for this ezine: looking beyond current boundaries in writing - striving for the good, the better, the best. After all, Port Yonder Press, sponsor for this cool new addition to the writing world, is A Horizon Beyond. Visit our staff page here.
Doodad ... You'll see this tiny doodad at the end of our articles: ~BE.
It simply stands for BEYONDARIES EZINE. Cool, huh? And of course it's in a beautiful ocean blue.
Want to Give ... your email address so we can tell you when the next issue comes out?
It's quarterly, so it'll be sometime in April. If you want a specific link, and you're not yet on our mailing list at Port Yonder Press, let us know at beyondaries@portyonderpress.com. We'll add you!
Yours for great writing,
Chila Woychik
